You know that feeling you get when you’re writing and just amazing stuff’s just pouring onto the page? I’m dubbing it “writer’s high.” That’s been me this last week. I got some just spectacular feedback from my critique group. Let me apologize right now to my husband and friends, but when I’m in the zone, I don’t want to waste it. Don’t want to lose all that possible geniusness.
Have you ever holed yourself up and not answered texts because you were in the zone?
Do you have any inspirations for the next “What my non-writer friends…”?
Happy writing!
This is part of the reason why I stick to emails, that I don’t use any Instant messaging systems anymore, and that I only show up on Skype when I schedule a call. I can be as spontaneous as the next person, but I like being able not to be invaded in my work/writing when I don’t want to. I take regular breaks, but I enjoy being able to wait five minutes or three hours or even a day to reply to something, as not to go at war with my muses.

This is a good strategy for when you need to get it done! Lately I’ve been turning off wifi and putting my phone in airplane mode.

YES or when they’re sitting right next to you, and you’re like please…I love you BUT PLEASE GO AWAY RIGHT NOW I NEED TO WRITE haha.

Yes, when that bird lands in your tree, you’d better grasp every single aspect of it, capture it right away, for those birds (inspired thoughts) are notoriously ephemeral.

So true!! And it’s not always easy to get into that…state….we’ll call it!

I am definitely guilty of this. When I’m in my writing zone I am in another world. I need a sign over my head that says “Do Not Disturb!”

Haha yes. Maybe add onto it, “I love you but…”

This is bang-on. You need to pull into the slipstream of that “writer’s high” and ride it out sans interruption. Of course, you’ll pay the price later, catching up, but it’s worth it.

Definitely! Love the way you phrased that, too. And thanks for the comment 🙂 Happy writing

It’s difficult to interrupt being in “Flow” (see the book by that name, by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi). It’s a normal psychological state. If your local non-writer does something that can completely absorb him (golf? soap carving? watching ants build ant hills?) you can try explaining it in those terms. But because for many persons writing is in the bottom three favorite occupations (rating just above public speaking and being hanged, drawn and quartered), you might also just save your breath and opt for the sign on your door or your head.

Haha interesting! Hadn’t thought of that. And I never realized how much writing is not enjoyed by others! Yes, yes I need a sign 🙂 Thanks for the comment!
