An Ode to Wisconsin: Driving on back country roads

(Taken on Highway 33 between Cashton and Hillsborough. Passed a few Amish buggies on the way, too)

I was digging through old pictures, looking at pictures of my hometown for the purposes of my new novel project Rafa and Rose and I found this picture. It made me miss driving, having the capacity to get in a car and go pretty much anywhere for as long and far as I want. My husband and me have no car here in Singapore. Average cost to purchase, say, a Nissan Versa–$100,000 in Singapore! That doesn’t include gas and insurance. While Singapore does have amazing public transportation, I miss being able to drive, listening to music and meditating on my writing or life in general. I mean look at that picture. What an awesome place to drive through, windows down on a beautiful summer day.

Camp NaNoWriMo—wait, it’s not in a real cabin?

14

ImageSo my sister and my writer’s group back home in Madison has a “cabin” at Camp NaNoWriMo and I was invited to join. At first I was like, sorry, wish I could fly back home from Singapore and stay in a quaint cabin on a lovely Wisconsin lake, but I really can’t. Then I found out it was a virtual cabin, lol. So I’ve signed up for Camp NaNoWriMo! I’ve signed up for NaNoWriMo before but never actually done it. Not because I’m too lazy; mostly because I usually don’t need to set goals around word count. I’m pretty good at cranking them out. Last November, my sister, also a novel writer, finally pressured me into signing up for NaNoWriMo. That girl’s done it–and finished!–several years running now. You go, sister! At the time, I’d finished Hooligans and had started the months and months and (still continuing) process of editing and re-working and that’s what I wanted to focus on, so I as a quitter before I even started.

Anyway, now in July, they have a Camp NaNoWriMo. The difference, as I understand it, is that you can set whatever goal you want for word count. It doesn’t have to be 50,000 words. And it’s summer camp themed, and that’s just fun! So I’m all signed up now. A good friend and I are starting a new novel together, have already started I suppose, so now I do need some pressure to write. It’s tentatively titled Rafa and Rose. Click here to see what it’s all about!  So this new novel is what I’ll be focusing on in July, in between all the crazy travels I have coming up in July. Thailand, Cambodia, and Bali! (one of the benefits of living in the concrete jungle of Singapore…all those destinations are a stone’s throw away)

This is what I imagine it’ll be like: (though I don’t know how much pizza there is in Southeast Asia outside of Singapore and apparently Ho Chi Mihn City, which has Pizza Huts)

ImageCamp NaNoWriMo here I come! If only it were a real cabin on a lake…. I’ll just imagine I’m here while I write then, maybe get one of those soothing sounds albums with birds chirping or something.

Or here, but with my laptop on that there picnic table 😛

Click here to go to the Camp NaNoWriMo website and learn more!  One of the things I’m most looking forward to with Camp NaNoWriMo is connecting with other writer friends from my old writing group and meeting new writer friends, cuz let’s face it, writers are just amazing people, right? If you’re doing camp NaNoWriMo and want to be my camping buddy, my camper name is “sarahjoydrop.”

Anyway… SARAH!!! Get back to editing Hooligans for the thousandth time! Sorry, sometimes I need to yell at myself. I have to get all the way though it before I start working on Rafa and Rose again….

Have you ever done NaNoWriMo? How was your experience? Any tips for meeting your goals?

Team USA beats Ghana in some game in Brazil. Is it the Olympics again or something? Wait, what’s the World Cup again?

JK I know what the World Cup is, mostly. And I even know it’s in Brazil, unlike 2/3 of other Americans lol. And I know this happened…

klinsmann-celebration-b.w1120.h628

So we beat this tiny country in Africa. Yaaaay!!! I guess?

borat great success

Irony…. I’m in a I forget what my British friends actually called it but I’ll call it a bracket but it’s wayyyyy simpler than that. Anyway, the teams I picked out of the hat were Germany (who are good, right?) and Ghana, who Murica just beat. Guess that ruins half my shot at winning fifty bucks. The bitter, bitter irony.

So obviously, the rest of the world is very excited. The US in general, meh. On my Facebook feed, I saw one mention of USA winning, and it was more like an ironic, go USA you managed to beat a developing country. Hope you’re proud. Way more posts about the Packers (obviously), Brewers, possibly even the Bucks basketball team (who are not very good, I guess). I kind of feel bad for our soccer/football team. All the rest of the teams, their home countries be all crazy about it. One stat I saw said that only 7% of the US planned to watch and cheer for Team USA. Though apparently there are plenty of excited people.

usa-fans-first-goal.w1120.h628I’m contemplating being a total fairweather fan, buying a knock-off jersey while in Viet Nam (that would be the only thing with USA on it that I own), trying to find one of those scarf things like all the rest of the world’s fans appear to have, and start chanting USA all over the place. Everyone else in the world is excited, I guess I could be, too. It would help pass the time til football starts in the Fall, too. Go Pack Go! I will say soccer/football fans appear to have way more fun at their games with their songs and their chants and their scarf things. I wish the Packers had a song all the fans sang…..

Anyway….

Survey questions: should I care about the World Cup? American friends, do you care about the World Cup? Why don’t Americans care about it–is it not American enough, do we have enough of all our own sports, is it the sketchy penalty calling?

English writing on the wall (in Viet Nam)

I took this today after getting of a boat on a tour of the Mekong Delta in Southern Viet Nam, about 3 hours outside Ho Chi Minh City (aka Saigon). This was written on a wall inside the somewhat sketchy building we docked at. Can you find the faded face painted in the corner?
